In the early 1950’s Andrew Bogaard worked at Fisher’s Feed and Seed in Lynden, WA., going farm to farm, buying and then wholesaling eggs in Seattle. But, when that industry faded, he seized on an opportunity and switched to hay. The winter of 1954 was hard in the Lynden area so Andy took his egg box off his flatbed truck and started going to Eastern Washington to buy Alfalfa to bring back to the dairymen. The remainder of 1955 Andy continued buying and selling Alfalfa and so began the beginning of Bogaard Hay Company.
In the early 1960’s, eldest son Gordon joined his dad in the business, first driving then buying alfalfa. In the mid 1970’s, youngest son Phil joined his father and brother in the business. He started with driving and unloading then eventually overseeing day to day operations, bookkeeping and dispatching.
By 1983 Bogaard Hay Company had significantly grown and the decision was made to build their own shop and hire a mechanic.
Later in the 1980’s Gord and Phil bought their dad out. In the years to follow, they expanded the business into selling alfalfa to exporters as well as additional backhauls such as lumber, shingles, potatoes, apples, sweet corn and cranberries, bringing alfalfa back to Lynden.
Because of increased work opportunities in Eastern Washington, property was purchased in 2012 in Moses Lake, WA. And it continues to serve as a second yard for Bogaard Hay Company.
In 2020, Phil’s son Ryan Bogaard along with Kevin Greiner bought Gord and Phil out.
